The wall comes before the model
A built-in safe disappears into the masonry, and discretion is its first virtue: what is not found is not attacked. It needs a load-bearing wall of real thickness. In the old core the old stone walls suit it, provided the chase is cut cleanly and whatever runs inside the wall is located first. The chase is then made good, and that is part of the job.
Many recent villas at Les Sources or Vianney pose the opposite problem. Behind the plasterboard of a dressing room or a study there is usually an insulated lining and an air gap before you reach the structural wall. A fixing that finds only that lining holds nothing at all. The wall is probed before drilling: it is the only way to know what is in front of you.
In a flat, at Le Pérollier as in the small buildings of the core, a concrete wall takes a fixing perfectly well, with the right kit and the services located beforehand. Weight counts too: past a certain mass the question becomes the floor and the route to the room you have chosen.
Placement, damp, and what the insurer asks for
Avoid the obvious spots: main bedroom, dressing room, study. They are searched first, and in a house standing alone in walled grounds whoever got in has time and is not overlooked from the street. Discretion counts for more here than on a shared landing. A low position behind fixed furniture stands up better to a quick search.
Watch the damp. Cellars and garages at the bottom of the grounds, in the shade of mature trees, stay cool and damp for much of the year in Écully. Papers, deeds and digital media suffer there. A perfectly fixed safe in a damp room protects against theft, not against mould. An interior wall in a heated room is worth more than a basement that smells of cellar.
The insurance policy is the starting point. It sets the amount covered for valuables kept at home, the level of resistance expected of the safe and, very often, the obligation to fix it as the manufacturer specifies. Read it before buying: the policy decides the model, not the other way round.
