The weather on the eastern plain shows up in the doors
Fog and frost on the plain are sharper here than along the lower Rhône. In Meyzieu damp settles into cylinders facing north, the old timber of the centre swells, and the condensation that forms on steel frames eventually marks the keep. A key that catches on the first white mornings almost always announces a full seizure in midwinter.
Summer does the opposite. On the houses of Le Carreau, south-facing patio doors and side doors expand, the leaf rubs at the head, and the top locking point of a multipoint is forced without anyone noticing. A door you have to lift to lock is not a habit to live with; it is an adjustment waiting to be made.
On the Meyzieu industrial estate the pace changes everything. An office door or a service entrance worked dozens of times a day wears out in a few years what a house door takes decades to wear. Door closers out of adjustment, handles that drop, tired electric strikes: the symptoms simply arrive earlier.
What each symptom means, and the moves that make it worse
The key turning freely means the cam of the cylinder, or a link inside the case, has given way and the mechanism is no longer driven. A limp handle that drops points instead to a worn spindle or a broken return spring. Seen from the landing the two faults look alike, but they are not repaired at the same point in the door, and in Meyzieu both turn up on office doors as often as on front doors.
A door that only locks if you lift it is usually a question of alignment. At Peyssilieu and in the older houses of Meyzieu the hinges have dropped and the frame has moved with the building, so the bolt no longer meets its keep. Resetting the adjustment settles a great many cases before anyone talks about replacement.
Three moves make things worse, in Meyzieu as anywhere else: forcing the key until it bends, squirting household oil that binds the dust of the plain inside the cylinder, and sliding a screwdriver between leaf and frame. The survey is done on site, and the itemised quote comes before the repair.
