What valley damp does to a mechanism
The fog that sits over the Saône plain keeps up a level of damp the coast never sees. The old leaves in the centre, often solid oak and seldom square, swell in autumn: the door has to be pushed, then lifted, and the lock gets the blame when it is the timber that has moved. You can read it on the frame, where the paint is polished by the rubbing leaf.
Outside, the cold decides. At Les Bulles a gate barrel or a garage barrel spends the whole year exposed, and one hard frost is enough to stop it. Do not heat the key, and do not squirt engine oil or a greasy release spray into it: the mixture holds the dust and turns a passing nuisance into a lasting fault.
In the Béligny blocks many cylinders have been turning since the 1970s with keys copied several times over. Each rough copy wears the pins a little further. Then comes the classic symptom: the key catches, you pull it back a millimetre to make it turn, and one day it turns without doing anything at all.
The signs that come before a door stops working
On a multipoint lock in Troussier the first signal is having to lean on the handle to lift it. Usually the lock is fine: the leaf has dropped on its hinges and the keeps no longer line up with the bolts. Adjusting keeps and hinges settles a great many cases before a point breaks off.
A key snapped in the barrel is the other frequent call. The fragment comes out with tools made for it. Do not try pliers, glue or a magnet: the piece goes deeper, the pins jam, and a simple extraction becomes a cylinder replacement. Keep the part of the key still in your hand, it helps when measuring up.
The diagnosis is made at the door, never over the phone: the lock is opened, looked at, and only then is a method named along with what it involves. A detailed quote is presented before the work and a detailed invoice at the end. On the old locks of the centre, some parts are no longer made and are worked around another way, discussed with you first.
