Place the address first: up on the plateau, or down in the valley
The break between the Rillieux plateau and the valley is not a figure of speech. Only a handful of roads make the climb, and an address at Crépieux-la-Pape has nothing in common with one at Les Semailles, near neighbours as the crow flies. Say at once whether you are up or down: travel conditions are set out during the call itself.
Up on the plateau, the new town blocks rarely front the street. You reach them across an esplanade, along a pedestrian walkway, or from a car park at the back, and successive demolitions have blurred the old numbering. Give the name of the residence, the block letter and the exact entrance, because one hall looks much like the next.
Down below, in Le Village and at Crépieux-la-Pape, it is the old street pattern that complicates matters: terraced houses, enclosed courtyards, outbuildings converted into homes, gates opening onto narrow streets. The entrance that actually works is not always the one carrying the number. At Vancia, the plot gate is what you meet first.
Latched or locked, and what you will be asked for
A door that has merely latched is held by the spring bolt alone. On the original doors of old Rillieux the timber has shifted from one season to the next, and the leaf ends up bearing at an angle inside its frame: where any play survives is found at the door itself, not over the phone. A tight weather seal or a low threshold strip moves the problem again.
A door locked with the key is another job. On the plateau everything turns on the date of the works: some buildings have received new landing doors locking at several points, others are still waiting their turn with hardware fitted in the 1960s. Say what you know about yours; it guides the survey, which is still made on site.
Before anything is opened you will be asked to show that you live there: a rent receipt, a utility bill, an insurance policy in your own name.
